Welcome

Thank you for taking the time to read our articles.
In this issue you will learn how to get your singing career going.

Because there is so much information about this subject, only the key points will be covered.

Readers will be approaching the following information from a variety of backgrounds, talent and experiences.  Musical Theater, Cruise Ship info and such will be discussed in another issue.

As you read on about how to start a career in the music business - remember this is a business.  Learn all you can about marketing, performing, agents and managers.

When selecting material to sing, select songs that are best suited for your voice.  Too many singers perform songs that are their favorites and that can be a big mistake..  You may like a song because it is the hit song for the month, or because your favorite artist or group recorded it.  Just because you love the song,  doesnt mean you should sing it. It could be all wrong for your type of voice.  Always select songs that are within your vocal range.  If you can't reach the high or low notes you are singing in the wrong key.

You just might miss an opportunity when it comes your way if you are not prepared.  The most important preparation is the quality of your voice.
Study with a qualified Vocal Instructor.  Learn just exactly what vocal techniques great singers use.

Develop confidence.  Those who think they can't, are probably right.

Believe in yourself!

Starting a Singing Career
You have worked hard to train your voice. You have developed a unique style and even been paid for a few performances.  You have found your passion and want to spend the rest of your life as a professional singer.

Do you have what it takes?
You have chosen a tough road and you must "get tough" and learn how to pick yourself up again and again.

You may have the greatest voice in the entire world, but it takes more than a fantastic voice to make it in todays' market.  You must have patience, determination and know what direction will be your primary focus.

To find out if you have what it takes check out  THE SIX BASIC INGREDIENTS FOR A SINGING CAREER.

You will be your biggest fan, marketing agent, judge and believer.  Don't sit around and wait for success to happen.  YOU must make it happen.

The first step is to record a demo so you have something to market.  You needn't record 6 full songs - either record 3 of your best or better yet, a medley of 5 or 6 of your best. Originals are more likely to keep the record companies listening to your demo.  Its too easy to compare your voice to the original artist if you record recent hits.

Next, get busy and design your own website.  If you need help, you may contact my personal webmaster at leonard@leonardyoung.com

Be sure to include your bio, photos and personal information as well as professional information.  Building a fan base is crucial to promoting yourself and you can begin to collect names from your guest book or forum where fans can chat and leave comments.  If you have recorded your own songs, be sure to put them on your website as MP3 downloads.  Just put samples, not the entire song.  Remember to copyright them first.

Now that your website is up and running, print your business cards and flyers with your new website address as well as your email address.

Contacting Singing Venues is the next step to marketing your talent.  You absolutely must have experience.  Begin by checking out the local venues in your surrounding area.  Have your promo package (photo, business cards, flyers, press releases, demo's) ready to pass out to key people.  When you have a completed promo pack and website, this lets others know you are serious about your singing career.
Keep yourself informed about local city government festivals, fairs and events.  Community theater is a great way to gain experience as a singer.

The most important thing to remember is to BE PREPARED.
